On April 28, 1988, Paradise flight 243 flies from Hilo to Honolulu. At 24,000 ft., An 18 ft. section of the front fuselage rips away due to metal fatigue. Captain Bob Schornstheimer and First Officer Mimi Tompkins must land a crippled aircraft with marginal controls and one engine gone, at nearby Kahului Airport, in Maui.
As a result of the heroic efforts of the personnel on board, Flight 243 was terminated with only one fatality.
After a 13 month study of the incident aboard Flight 243, the National Transportation Safety Board has concluded that a number of factors, including metal fatigue contributed to the incident.
Because of this incident, the airline industry has made significant changes in the operation and maintenance of all flights.
